Reports suggest that John Lackey is about to sign a contract with the Boston Red Sox
The Mets have considered that subject. After gauging the markets for Bay and the free-agent pitching class during the recently concluded winter meetings, the Mets feel that Bay would be more attainable unless Lackey’s price were to drop. They realize they need pitching, but the prospect of adding a slugger like Bay and a sturdy starter is more appealing than going all in for Lackey and trying to trade for a left fielder that’s part of matt holliday rumors.
Updating a previous report, Jerry Crasnick, of ESPN.com, reports the Boston Red Sox are making progress on a deal for free-agent SP John Lackey (Angels), and he is taking a physical Monday, Dec. 14. There are no indications as to where the team is at in regards to their negotiations with Lackey and his agent, Steve Hilliard.
If Bay does not sign with the Mets, the team figures to concentrate on Lackey because the gulf is so wide between him and the rest of the free-agent pitchers.
Not long ago, the Mets had one of the best lineups in the National League, and most of those pieces seem set to return in 2010. General Manager Omar Minaya believes he has a good foundation in john lackey red sox, Jose Reyes, David Wright, Carlos Beltran and Jeff Francoeur. Luis Castillo was a solid No. 2 hitter last season. Barring a shift in the market, the Mets seem likely to sign their top catching target, Bengie Molina, who represents a big offensive upgrade over Brian Schneider. If Bay joins the Mets, he would supply much-needed home runs, consistent production and right-handed power.
